New Songs Added - 4/9/07

I didn't add any new songs by American Idol contestants, but I did add some oldies and some independent artists.

From 1985 is the song "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by Simple Minds. I found this interesting write up about the song in Wikipedia:
Don't You (Forget About Me)" is a song written for the soundtrack of the 1985 John Hughes movie The Breakfast Club. The songwriters were disco producer Keith Forsey, (who won an Oscar for "Flashdance... What a Feeling") and Steve Schiff (edgy post punk guitarist songwriter from the Nina Hagen band.)

Forsey asked both Bryan Ferry and Billy Idol to record the song, but both declined; Idol would later perform a cover of it on his 2001 greatest hits compilation. Schiff then suggested Forsey ask the Scottish New Wave band Simple Minds, who initially refused as well, but then agreed under the encouragement of their label, A&M. According to one account, the band "rearranged and recorded 'Don’t You (Forget About Me)' in three hours in a north London studio and promptly forgot about it."

Propelled by the success of The Breakfast Club, the song became the band's only number-one U.S. hit (though, by all accounts, Simple Minds did not much care for it). The song was not included on Simple Minds' subsequent Once Upon a Time album, finally appearing on the 1992 best-of Glittering Prize 81/92.
Also included are songs such as the 1982 hit, "Shake It Up", by The Cars; "Watermark" by Enya; "Right Down the Line" by Gerry Rafferty ; "Luck of the Draw" by Bonnie Raitt; "Beautiful Girl" by INXS; and "Who Are You" by The Who.

There are three new tracks by independent artists this week. I have been enjoying Eliot Popkin's "Endless Ride" so much that I have also added his song "Soar".

A new artist to the station is No Fixed Abode from the U.K. I have added their song "Will You Come Dance With Me" from their new album of original and traditional folk music, Clearwater.
No Fixed Abode are fronted by Una Walsh singing in her own lilting Irish accent and Tony Dean supporting on acoustic guitar. Based in Derbyshire No Fixed Abode have traveled all across the UK over the last three years building up a solid reputation performing at festivals and acoustic clubs.

Their new album Clearwater, due for release 10th April 2007 is an eclectic mix of songs ranging from the pure voice/guitar arrangement of Call Me to a full folk rock sound of School Days with emotional stops all along the way. US radio stations have already spotted the potential of the album and are regularly featuring songs from the album on their play lists.

Another new artist to the station is Jacob Miller with his song "Life".
Hailing from Miami, Florida, music was integrated into Miller’s life from an early age: “There was a piano in my home when I was growing up. Actually, my dad had an entire music room where he also kept a guitar, harmonica, saxophone, clarinet, banjo and tambourine. I don’t really remember when I started to play the piano. From the time I was about 3 or 4, I had a few lessons here and there, but I was always just more of an emotional player than a technical one.” This formative musical grounding propelled him into the teeming diversity of the Miami milieu during his high school years at the New World School of the Arts. Since that time, Jacob has met and made music with a dramatic range of talented musicians. Currently, he has made it to the halfway point at Berklee College of Music in Boston and continues to experience life on the road from South Florida to New York including concert performances in Denmark, Paris and Spain.
