New Songs Added - 4/30/07

I think I've got a nice mix of songs this week. From the American Idol front, there are tracks from the currents CD's for John Stevens (All of Me) and Kelly Clarkson (Where Is Your Heart). I also have the new single, "Nothin' Like The Summer," from Carmen Rasmusen.

There are some cool tunes such as "Pennies From Heaven" by Chris Botti (featuring Renee Olstead), "Clocks" by Coldplay, "Constant Craving" by k.d. lang, "Breathe You In" by Kurt Nilsen and "Kashmir" by William Joseph. And just for the fun of it, I also added one of my favorite fun songs, "Coconut" by Harry Nilsson. I've added "Who'll Stop The Rain" by Creedence Clearwater Revival and an updated version of Simply Red's "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye". This Cole Porter song has been covered many times, but for some reason, Simply Red's version moves me more than any other version I've heard.

While looking for the website for the group America, I found that they have a new double CD album that was just released in January. One disc with new music and a live disc that was recorded in 2005. If you go to the album's page on Amazon.com you can watch a video of their song "Chasing The Rainbow." This week I have chosen to feature their classic song, "Ventura Highway." Here is an excerpt from their biography:
In the midst of their fourth decade of music making, America have been perennials on the concert circuit for 34 years, pleasing their loyal fan base and attracting new generations of followers. The band's new 2-CD set, Here & Now is a spectacular distillation of the group's signature sound past and present, comprising one studio record of all new material and a second live disc taped at XM Radio featuring renditions of songs found on the group's multi-platinum greatest hits album, History.

Their new studio album is a fresh blast of classic Americana shaped by the contemporary sensibilities of producers Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne) and James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins) and features guests, Ryan Adams, Ben Kweller, Jim James and Patrick Hallahan (My Morning Jacket), Ira Elliot and Matthew Caws (Nada Surf), Stephen Bishop and Mark Rozzo (Maplewood). "One of the main attractions for Adam (Schlesinger) and James (Iha) was their initial love of the America sound," explains Gerry Beckley. "We have intentionally tried to keep that being the main focus. We're not trying to emulate or go backwards but the initial ingredients have always remained common to us, which were an abundance of acoustic instrument sounds, a lot of vocal harmony and interesting melodies and lyrics in the forefront." Dewey adds, "Adam and James are terrific to work with. We've tried to maintain the elements of our own traditions so those things haven't changed. We're not moving into electronic music but there are a few quirky things on the album. We're doing a few outside tracks including "Always Love" by Nada Surf."
I am featuring a number of new artists this week. Jon McLaughlin is launching his new album, "Indiana" this month with his lead single, "Beautiful Disaster." (Which is not the same as the song by Kelly Clarkson.) You can preview his album on the AOL Full CD Listening Party. (While you're there, be sure to check out the new album by Kimberley Locke too.) An excerpt from his biography:
Jon's songwriting finally began to take authentic shape when he enrolled in Anderson University's School of Music. There he spent countless hours developing the foundations for his debut album. With his classically trained ear and influences from Ben Folds and Billy Joel, Jon McLaughlin has crafted his unique piano-driven rock style to create a sound that has delighted audiences and coated the states with his sound.

The self-titled debut album covers a mass of musical ground, beginning with the funk-rock driven Some Tight Fix, to the airy jazz sound of Blue Skies, the nonchalant elegance of Once Again, the simple and classic piano-driven Loving Me, and ending with the album's first single, a rag-time piano-roll track Throwing A Line.
"Slammin'" is the lead single from the sophomore effort, "Stay Awhile," by the award winning guitarist, Jay Soto that is due to drop on May 29. Here is an excerpt from his biography:
Drawing from a vast background of experience as a sideman, Soto's role as the lead guitarist for acclaimed Christian group "Vessel," gave him the opportunity to appear before thousands of listeners in major Christian venues with such notable acts as Margaret Backer, Jon Gibson, Whiteheart and The Newsboys. Soto was also the lead guitarist for Zum Zum Zum, a highly acclaimed Latin group based out of Phoenix, Arizona. Soto's involvement with the group taught him the finer points about Latin rhythms, which he now incorporates into his playing and technique. During this time in his career, he opened up for major acts such as Vikki Carr, Acoustic Alchemy and the Latin group, Cumbia Kings. These experiences and performances have seasoned Soto into one of the finest Smooth Jazz guitarists of his generation.

His memorable melodies and impeccable technique are evident in his successful debut release, Long Time Coming, which has received outstanding reviews from critics everywhere and has opened many doors for this young and rising star. His self-produced debut caught the attention of producer greats, Jeff Lorber and Paul Brown who helped produce his sophomore release, Stay A While, scheduled to be released in April of 2007. Other producers on the album include Darren Rahn (Wayman Tisdale, Jonathan Butler) and Mario Mendivil (Nelson Rangell). With the likes of Jeffrey Osborne, Jeff Lorber and Michael Lington on his release, Soto is in star-studded company and sure to catch the attention of Smooth Jazz fans everywhere.
"Beautiful" is a track by the independent artist Yurko from his debut CD, "Heavy". An excerpt from his bio describes some of his background:
Recent (2005) recordings of Yurko's guitar playing can be heard on AMANDA STOTT (EMI) produced by Jon Levine (Philosopher Kings, Nelly Furtado) and Andreas Carlsson (Backstreet Boys, Bon Jovi), EMMA ROBERTS (Sony) produced by Brian Malouf (Foo Fighters, Eve 6) and SOCIAL CODE (Universal) with producer Arnold Lanni (Simple Plan, Our Lady Peace).

Yurko has also recorded and/or toured with several successful Canadian independent artists such as Likota Son, Smeer, Lucie Idlout, Candida Clauser, Trust, Anjulie, Rachel Robinson, Vivian George, Carlo Coppola, Mary Zilba and even hit the stage with legendary guitar slinger Kim Mitchell on his Greatest Hits Tour.
He may not be a new artist, but Michael Bublé does have a new album set to drop this week. Be sure to check it out as I think it is his best album yet. You can listen to the album this week on the AOL Full CD Listening Party.
Ask Michael Bublé how he felt going in to record his third studio album, Call Me Irresponsible, and this artist with 11 million albums sold and two Grammy nominations under his belt can sum it up in one word.

“Terrified,” he says simply. Terrified?

“Completely, because I knew that it had to be better than the first two — that it had to show growth without alienating anyone, and that’s a tough line. So I sat there from the very beginning and came up with the songs, put together the skeleton, and thought about what arrangers I would hire. I even ended up at the mastering session, which artists rarely attend. I wanted to be involved in every aspect because I wanted it to be conceptually beautiful.”

Bublé has certainly achieved success on that front. As with his previous two 143/Reprise bestsellers, 2003’s self-titled debut and 2005’s multi-platinum follow-up It’s Time, Call Me Irresponsible boasts more of Bublé’s buoyant, modern interpretations of standards from a variety of eras, including songs by such greats as Leonard Cohen, Eric Clapton, Cy Coleman, Gamble and Huff, and others, as well as two self-penned originals, including the first single, the uplifting love song called “Everything.”
Happy listening!

Ask your Representative to cosponsor the new royalty bill!

The Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) recently denied webcasters' requests for a rehearing on its ruling of unfairly high new royalty rates -- a stunning 300 to 1200 percent increase -- for Internet radio for period 2006-2010.

In response to these new and unfair fees, Representative Jay Inslee (D-WA) introduced the Internet Radio Equality Act (HR 2060) on April 26th. This bill will provide immediate relief from the proposed new rates and can save thousands of Internet radio stations from going off the air.

Click here for more details on HR 2060.

Live365 and the other members of the SaveNetRadio Coalition fully support this proposal and are working diligently to see it turned into law. The next step is to line up cosponsors for HR 2060, but time is running short.

Live365 asks that you IMMEDIATELY:

CALL your Representative and ask them to cosponsor HR 2060 -- the Internet Radio Equality Act. Click here to find your Representative's number.

New Songs Added - 4/23/07

Among the American Idol alumni I have added album tracks such as Diana DeGarmo's "All I Never Wanted" from her album, "Blue Skies" and George Huff's "Only Love" from his album, "Miracles."

I discovered that Sarah Mather, who was in the top 24 from season 4, has an EP available from iTunes and I chose to feature her song, "Another Day" this week:
Born in Montreal to a musical family Sarah started singing at a young age. At 5 years old she sang in different choral groups and musical productions.

Moving to Charlotte at 10 she began to take on her love for music and joined the Charlotte Children’s Choir, and immersed her self in several other ensembles and musical theater. Her influences range form Led Zeppelin, to Allison Krauss. She listened to everything being the baby girl to two brothers.

When she was 14 she started singing in bands. She continued performing with a local band “Moe Black” for 5 years and was able to tour and play with great musicians. Wanting to further her career, she auditioned for American Idol in August 2004 and made it to the top 12 girls. She found it to be a life changing experience.

A day after her departure form the show she moved to New York City to pursue her dreams in music, she has just released her EP “Another Day” on iTunes, and is currently finishing her debut album that she is co writing with Grammy Nominated producer Ernie Lake.

Check out her Rock/Country fusion, and look for the album coming out this summer.
Jared Michael Yates was also a top 24 contestant from season 4 of American Idol. He has released his own album titled, "all that I am..." You can go here to listen to the songs and see the videos.

An excerpt from his bio:
Since appearing on American Idol, Jared Michael Yates has begun recording some of his own, original music and is currently being shopped to major record labels as a Pop/Rock/R&B singer. Jared describes his music as "pop with an Rock and Hip Hop influence." He's currently working with Grammy-nominated producer Jeff Anderson and Sound Logic Studios in Lafayette, Indiana, to record his original music.

Jared began writing songs as a way to broaden his talent and express himself musically. "The original music I've been writing and recording is a direct reflection of my personal life, relationships and experiences. Some of the songs are about my experience with the industry and my realization of what Life’s journey is about and where it’s leading me. A lot of people, especially teenagers, will be able to relate to these songs since I am in their age range. I think a lot of teens these days don’t have many outlets to focus their expressions. Hopefully my songs will help a lot of people and show them that they are not alone.”
"Philosophia" by The Guggenheim Grotto was a free download from iTunes and I liked it so much I decided to add it as well as a current song by Corinne Bailey Rae called "Put Your Records On". "Trouble" by Ray LaMontagne was a song chosen a couple of times by American Idol contestants so I thought I would add it to the playlist this week also.

The other songs added this week are "Mandolin Moon" by Sister Hazel, "Nothing At All" by Kasey Chambers, "Feel Like Home" by John Paul, and "Satellite" by Guster.

New Songs Added - 4/16/07

I am adding four songs by American Idol alumni this week. There are new selections from current albums such as "U Make Me Better" by Bo Bice and "Gonna Move" by Taylor Hicks. I found a track, "As Vain As You" by Vanessa Olivarez that was released on an imported compilation album called "Girls Night Out 3".

I also found a single that Kimberly Caldwell released last September called "Who Will You Run To". I looked on her website and this is what she had to say about the change in direction that she is taking for her album:
Kimberly continues to work on her debut album with the help of Randy Jackson and Diane Warren. Kimberly is going back to her Texas roots pursuing a country-rock genre. Kim is also working with an independent producer to record some of her own music.

Kimberly wrote to her fans in June 2006 stating, "I have a new music manager that's working with us on the album and he's really helping to get the ball rolling! It's taken us awhile now, but after some serious soul searching, we decided to take a change in directions and I'm going back to my country music roots. My music is definitely going to be country rock and I'm really excited about the progress we're making. My first single, which is, of course, a Diane Warren song, is going to be released this summer! I can't wait and I hope you all love it as much as I do!"
I have added another song by Suzie McNeil which is her single, "Hung Up", that is currently climbing the charts in Canada. She also now has an album out titled "Broken and Beautiful" and this is what she has to say about her CD:
“Broken and Beautiful” was recorded at Poppy Studios in Monrovia, California, produced by Marti Frederiksen, and features Suzie working with a number of songwriters among them Kara DioGuardi (Santana, Christine Aguilera, Pussycat Dolls), Goo Goo Doll’s Johnny Reznick, and Pink.

“I’ve had one hell of a year” says McNeil. “I loved touring with Pink, but finally had to turn down the European leg of the tour so I could take a breath and make plans for my own album release.

“Recording this album was a life changing experience” says Suzie. “I really feel like I walked out of the studio with something for everybody. It was such a joy to work with all these talented people, and now I have to make good”.
On the independent front we have a couple of young women who I think are particularly interesting. First there is Amy Kuney with her song "How The Wind Must Feel". This is the description of her CD "EP" on her website:
Amy Kuney's debut CD, simply titled "EP," was the highest rated indie CD of 2006 in Music Connection Magazine. Co-produced by studio veterans Peter Barker and Mandi Martin, the CD contains six songs all written and performed by Amy. Since the release of "EP," three of its songs were featured in the NBC daytime soap opera Passions and the entire CD has been licensed for several MTV shows, including The Hills, Laguna Beach, Pimp My Ride, Housebroken and the 2007 MTV Movie Awards Show. Amy and "EP" have earned numerous accolades and nominations, including All Access Music Awards' Best New Group/Artist, Best Female Pop/Alternative Vocalist, Best Pop/Alternative Album of the Year and Best Overall Songwriter, as well as an L.A. Music Awards nomination for Best AAA CD of the Year. The CD is available on indie label Spin Move Records.

Amy's songs are a very much a diary of the travels and experiences she has had. They resonate clearly with our lives and times while showcasing Amy's wonderfully fresh and creative songwriting talents. Amy's voice comes through clear and strong. Truly a stunning debut collection.
Olivia Eden is a new talent from Australia and I am featuring her Grammy nominated song "Ordinary Girl". This is an excerpt from the bio on her Myspace page:
Born in Hollywood, Olivia Eden was always destined to be a star. At the age of 8, Olivia moved from Los Angeles to the Australian bush. She had little in the way of entertainment except for nature and her piano, and it has developed into an inseparable relationship. Olivia has a beautiful voice that immediately grabs your attention. Olivia does not put on a voice like so many other pop artists do. People who listen to Olivia hear the sweetness of Natalie Imbruglia, the warmth of Enya and Faith Hill, the sassy of Madonna, the folk and sensitivity of Jewel, and the harmonies of KD Lang. She has an eclectic sound which makes her interesting, new and original. Olivia is unusual because, unlike so many other pop artists that we see now, she writes her own material, plays an instrument while performing, and has an amazing voice. She is the Tori Amos, Alanis Morissette and Suzanne Vega of the past. Her musical styles range from pop to country to alternative. Olivia is a real musician who follows a path of making music and sharing her musical talents with the rest of the world. Olivia's song lyrics reflect the artist that she is: punchy and personal.
I have also included the current hits "Tim McGraw" by Taylor Swift and "Little Wonders" by Rob Thomas as well as the tried and true "Heart of Gold" by Neil Young, "Send Your Love" by Sting and "Shout" by Tears for Fears.

Enjoy!

New Songs Added - 4/9/07

I didn't add any new songs by American Idol contestants, but I did add some oldies and some independent artists.

From 1985 is the song "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by Simple Minds. I found this interesting write up about the song in Wikipedia:
Don't You (Forget About Me)" is a song written for the soundtrack of the 1985 John Hughes movie The Breakfast Club. The songwriters were disco producer Keith Forsey, (who won an Oscar for "Flashdance... What a Feeling") and Steve Schiff (edgy post punk guitarist songwriter from the Nina Hagen band.)

Forsey asked both Bryan Ferry and Billy Idol to record the song, but both declined; Idol would later perform a cover of it on his 2001 greatest hits compilation. Schiff then suggested Forsey ask the Scottish New Wave band Simple Minds, who initially refused as well, but then agreed under the encouragement of their label, A&M. According to one account, the band "rearranged and recorded 'Don’t You (Forget About Me)' in three hours in a north London studio and promptly forgot about it."

Propelled by the success of The Breakfast Club, the song became the band's only number-one U.S. hit (though, by all accounts, Simple Minds did not much care for it). The song was not included on Simple Minds' subsequent Once Upon a Time album, finally appearing on the 1992 best-of Glittering Prize 81/92.
Also included are songs such as the 1982 hit, "Shake It Up", by The Cars; "Watermark" by Enya; "Right Down the Line" by Gerry Rafferty ; "Luck of the Draw" by Bonnie Raitt; "Beautiful Girl" by INXS; and "Who Are You" by The Who.

There are three new tracks by independent artists this week. I have been enjoying Eliot Popkin's "Endless Ride" so much that I have also added his song "Soar".

A new artist to the station is No Fixed Abode from the U.K. I have added their song "Will You Come Dance With Me" from their new album of original and traditional folk music, Clearwater.
No Fixed Abode are fronted by Una Walsh singing in her own lilting Irish accent and Tony Dean supporting on acoustic guitar. Based in Derbyshire No Fixed Abode have traveled all across the UK over the last three years building up a solid reputation performing at festivals and acoustic clubs.

Their new album Clearwater, due for release 10th April 2007 is an eclectic mix of songs ranging from the pure voice/guitar arrangement of Call Me to a full folk rock sound of School Days with emotional stops all along the way. US radio stations have already spotted the potential of the album and are regularly featuring songs from the album on their play lists.

Another new artist to the station is Jacob Miller with his song "Life".
Hailing from Miami, Florida, music was integrated into Miller’s life from an early age: “There was a piano in my home when I was growing up. Actually, my dad had an entire music room where he also kept a guitar, harmonica, saxophone, clarinet, banjo and tambourine. I don’t really remember when I started to play the piano. From the time I was about 3 or 4, I had a few lessons here and there, but I was always just more of an emotional player than a technical one.” This formative musical grounding propelled him into the teeming diversity of the Miami milieu during his high school years at the New World School of the Arts. Since that time, Jacob has met and made music with a dramatic range of talented musicians. Currently, he has made it to the halfway point at Berklee College of Music in Boston and continues to experience life on the road from South Florida to New York including concert performances in Denmark, Paris and Spain.

New Songs Added - 4/2/07

Wow, it's April already! Here are some fresh new tunes to go along with the beautiful Spring weather.

On the American Idol front I have added "The Maze" by Taylor Hicks. I really like the Billy Joel feel it has to it. I also found an album by Jordan Segundo who was a contestant in season 2 of American Idol. He didn't make the top 12, but I thought he was a very good singer. So, I have added the song "So Many Reasons" from his CD. I also changed Kimberley Locke's track for "Change" to one of the remixed, dance versions that is on the single release. A little more bounce.

Also included in the new adds to my playlist is Michael Buble's new single, "Everything" from his new album "Call Me Irresponsible" which is scheduled to hit the stores on May 1. Another new song is "Last Dollar (Fly Away)" by Tim McGraw from his new album "Let It Go" that just came out in March. Another up and coming single on the country charts is the new single "Tennessee" by The Wreckers.

A faithful listener kindly made some suggestions for the playlist and I decided to also add "It's My Life" by No Doubt, "Remembering You" by Steven Curtis Chapman and "Crystal Ball" by Keane. Keane seems to be a particular favorite since I have had more than one listener request more Keane.

Also, in the middle of last week, I decided to also add a track, "Homeward Bound" from the album "Within" by the pianist William Joseph. He is an amazing young pianist that has been working with the famed producer, David Foster. He also has worked with Clay Aiken. He toured with Clay on his 2005 Christmas tour and is featured on the track "Everything I Have" from Clay's album, "A Thousand Different Ways."

Happy listening!
