New Songs Added - 2/25/07

This week I have switched out some more songs. From those who were contestants on American Idol I have "Dreams" by Diana Degarmo, "My Boyfriend's Back" by Paris Bennett, "Boy Next Door" by Jon Peter Lewis, "Didn't You Know How Much I Loved You" by Kellie Pickler, and "Some Hearts" by Carrie Underwood.

I have added the track "You Belong To Me" by Michael Buble that comes from an early CD called "Dream." And another track that I thought would be interesting to add is the original, Dolly Parton version of "I Will Always Love You." Some more current songs added to the playlist are "Trouble Sleeping" by Corinne Bailey Rae and "(You Want To) Make A Memory" by Bon Jovi.

"Love Song" by Sara Bareilles is a free download on iTunes this week and I think it sounds great.
Her sound has been described as everything from Norah Jones to Joni Mitchell, Fiona Apple to Alicia Keyes. It is tempting to make comparisons but she's much more than a carbon copy. In fact, she is anything but. Influenced by soul, jazz, rock, and pop-her writing is bold, honest, and edgy. Intelligent, unpredictable lyrics and melodies delivered courtesy of a truly soulful and powerful voice, Sara's music is something that definitely sets her apart.

Sara sang and performed in her native Humboldt County community productions and high school ensembles, but has no formal training in either voice or piano. Much of her adolescence was spent perched in front of a worn piano teaching herself chords and scribbling out simple melodies and lyrics. Though her first compositions "Star Sweeper" and "I love a Parade" didn't win her any Grammies they remain testimony to the fact that songwriting has been a passion of this 25 year-old since a young age. Over the years, those early compositions have grown into songs that are currently heard in independent films, television, and on local radio. The first performances seen only by the walls of the house she grew up in are now experienced by hundreds of people at a time ...read more here.
And I added "Ladies Love Country Boys" by Trace Adkins because I really like the video!

Internet Radio Day of Silence

This is an internet radio announcement that will affect Rose Radio's broadcast tomorrow. More information and a list of participating stations can be found here.
The Sounds of Silence Will be Heard By Millions
National Day of Silence for U.S. Webcasters to be Held in Protest of Fee Hike

WASHINGTON D.C. – The regularly scheduled programming of millions of Internet radio listeners will be temporarily interrupted tomorrow when tens of thousands of U.S. webcasters observe a national Day of Silence. Protesting the recent 300 percent royalty rate increase for online music webcasters, the aim of the industry wide daylong blackout is to raise awareness of the threat these new rates pose to the future of Internet radio and rally support for legislation pending in Congress. "Webcasters of every size and from every corner of the country will stand united tomorrow to protest a very real and fast approaching threat to their livelihood,” said Jake Ward, a spokesperson for the SaveNetRadio Coalition. “With nearly a half million emails and phone calls from webcasters, listeners, and the artists they support sent to Congress in just the last two months, this national grassroots campaign has certainly captured the attention of lawmakers, but there is more to be done and time is running out.

During the National Day of Silence webcasters will urge their listeners to contact their congressional representatives and ask them to support the Internet Radio Equality Act and preserve the future of Internet radio. Tomorrow the silence of tens of thousand of webcasters will make the call to save Internet radio heard loud and clear.

Internet-only webcasters and broadcasters that simulcast online will alert their listeners that "silence" is what Internet radio may be reduced to after July 15th, the day on which 17 months' worth of retroactive royalty payments -- at new, exceedlingly high rates --are due to the SoundExchange collection organization, following a recent Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) decision.

New Songs Added - 6/18/07

Sorry that I didn't get this blog up yesterday. It has been a busy week.

Mostly this week I switched off some songs with artists I have already been playing. On the American Idol front we have "Any Which Way" by Kimberley Locke, "Heaven Knows" by Taylor Hicks, "Behind These Hazel Eyes" by Kelly Clarkson, and "The Shadow Of Your Smile" by John Stevens. A new addition is "Sway" by this past season's favorite, Melinda Doolittle.

I decided to go with the really cool version of "Me and Mrs. Jones" by Michael Buble. "Autumn Leaves" by Eva Cassidy is quite lovely and I just love "Storms in Africa" by Enya. I also went with "Piano Fantasy" by William Joseph, "A Part of Me" by Kurt Nilsen, "Your Eyes Open" by Keane, "Absent Friends" by No Fixed Abode, and that great oldie, "Wrapped Around Your Finger" by The Police.

Lauren Wood is a new artist that I have added to the lineup with her song "Contradictions". Here is her bio:
LAUREN WOOD is a world-renowned songwriter, recording artist, musician, producer and voice-over artist. She is best known for her smash hit song, “FALLEN” from the award-winning movie/ soundtrack, “PRETTY WOMAN", which sold over 17 million copies, and from her top 3 hit duet with MICHAEL McDONALD, “PLEASE DON’T LEAVE,” released on one of her four albums for WARNER BROTHER’S RECORDS. She has also written Top 20 hits for Gladys Knight and Phillip Bailey, as well as songs for Cher, Dusty Springfield, Johnny Mathis, Sammy (Van Halen) Hagar, Animotion, Larry Coryell, Warren Hill, Leo Sayer, Billy Preston, Nicolette Larson, Tiffany, Albert Hammond, Presuntos Implicados and many others. Rita Coolidge performed Lauren’s song, “Echo My Heart” for “Farm Aid.” Lauren’s songs have appeared in numerous films and television shows including, “Police Academy,” “Days of Our Lives,” and “That’s Life.”

In addition to her original recordings, Lauren’s distinctive voice can be heard singing lead on the NBC hit series theme song, “JUST SHOOT ME,” as well as many national commercials including, “NIKE,” “BUDWEISER,” and “NINTENDO.” She has also appeared as a background vocalist for Devo, The Doobie Brothers, Kim Carnes, and Frank Zappa, and on commercials for “Oldsmobile,” “7-up” and “Cadillac.” She records voice-over for animation and music for film and TV including, “The Rugrats,” “Jackie Chan,” Disney’s, “The Tigger Movie,” and Disney’s “Little Mermaid-II,” and she has appeared on a number of TV shows including, ”Rosanne’s Talk Show,” “Animal Planet” and “Entertainment Tonight.”

Lauren produced one independent CD in 1999 entitled, “LAUREN WOOD,” and has just released her second Independent CD, “LOVE, DEATH and CUSTOMER SERVICE,” on her own label, Bad Art Records. Her songs feature artists and musicians including Stephen Bishop, Bill Payne (Little Feat), Melissa Manchester and Vicki Randle (Tonight Show). Lauren recently performed at the JOHN ANSON FORD THEATRE in Hollywood and made a guest appearance with Ambrosia and Kenny Rankin in the “Have a Heart” annual fundraising concert.

New Songs Added - 6/4/07

Switching out some of Clay Aiken's songs on the list are the only songs by an American Idol alumni that I added this week. I removed "A Thousand Days", "Everything I Do", "I Will Carry You" and Shine replacing them with "Invisible", "Run To Me", "Lonely No More" and "Without You."

"First Time" is the first single from Lifehouse's new album "Who We Are" that is slated for release on June 19.

On Who We Are, singer-songwriter Jason Wade—along with drummer Rick Woolstenhulme and bassist Bryce Soderberg—gets back to the basics of what made him first form the band while still a teenager in suburban California.

Says Jason: “We just love making music and feel really lucky to be able to continue doing it.”

Producing themselves for the first time with Jude Cole, who also co-wrote several of the new songs, that joy comes across unfettered on the rocking twang of the lead single, “First Time,” already climbing the Hot A/C and Top 40 charts, a fond look back at the butterflies and excitement of the initial rush of romance.

“It just felt urgent, like a first kiss, a first love,” says Jason. “Like the first time you realize there’s more to that relationship than you thought. I had to dig a little for that one, but I find myself at a place where I can write stuff that’s a little deeper than your average love song in terms of emotion.” ...read more here.

The independent artists that I am featuring this week are the divineMAGgees. "Little Black Crow" is a track from their debut studio CD "love me like the roses."
Since the fateful night seven years ago when Cregan and Danielle met in a Boston bar, the duo has lived up and down the east coast and performed throughout the country at festivals like Michigan Womyn's Music Festival, SXSW in Austin, NXNE in Toronto and International Folk Alliance in Memphis. Maine was the birthplace and home of divineMAGgees (pronounced "Maggies") until 2004, when the duo sought to expand their touring base by moving south. After a year in Athens, GA, they settled in Asheville, NC, in the heart of the southern appalachians.

Individually, Danielle Tibedo and Cregan Montague bring years of musical training and experience to this mutual labor of love. ...read more here.
The other songs added this week are "Devil Inside" by INXS; "Domino" by Van Morrison; "Witchy Woman" by The Eagles; "Beautiful Flower" by India.Arie; "That's All" by Genesis; and "What's Love Got To Do With It" by Tina Turner.

Happy listening!
