New Songs Added - 5/28/07

This week I have added new tunes from this year's American Idol winner Jordin Sparks (I Who Have Nothing) and finalist Blake Lewis (You Give Love A Bad Name). I have also switched out Ayla Brown's Know You Better with Thanks To You.

Did you know that Julianne Hough, the winner of this season's Dancing With The Stars, also sings? She has a country single available on iTunes called Will You Dance With Me? It is quite good and I have added it to the playlist this week along with Paul McCartney's new single, Ever Present Past; Embrace's single, Gravity, from their 2005 album "Embrace"; and I Wish I Wasn't by Heather Headley.

Home by Great Northern was available as a free download on iTunes and rather like it a lot. Here is an excerpt from their bio:
Great Northern songs are genuinely, memorably melodic, and it’s the several coatings of so many melodies within each track that makes them something to return to again and again. “It’s important to Solon and me that the songs have a lot to offer,” says Stolte. “The songs on my mind are the ones that you hear over and over and you hear something new every time.” The very moody “lOw IS a hEIghT” is inarguably a gorgeous song, but what’s it about? A crucial ambiguity raises its pointy head when the band embarks on an extended instrumental coda that brings variation to the main theme, as if crystalizing the essence of the mood the song seeks to convey. Building to a caterwauling intensity, “Telling Lies” flirts with the epic (in short form, of course) by fusing tremeloed multiple guitars and voices as drummer Davey thrashes artfully. Exhilarating dervishes of high whining keyboard strings and guitars lure you to the bridge, where you might find yourself utterly addicted when they snow this glorious mountain of sound with spine-tingling counterpoint backing “aaah”s. “There isn’t any specific formula for crafting a song – the song will just tell you what it has to be. It can stem from an emotion, which then evolves lyrically or otherwise. Ultimately, when you listen to a song in your bedroom with headphones, it should be able to take you away, maybe on a little journey.” And for Great Northern, that journey has just begun – and the horizon has never looked so magnificent. ...read more here.

I had been playing Chasing Rainbows by Steve Larkman and decided that I would change it out with a new selection, All I Wanna Do Is Dance, from his first album.
After many successful years helping great acts to achieve quality recordings Steve released his first solo album TEARJERKER in July 2003. This record received extensive radio play and very fine reviews and was followed by a truly brilliant second album THE START OF THE END OF THE WORLD in mid 2004. From these two critically well received and popular albums and the singles Chasing Rainbows (released April 2004) and Saved By Rain (released January 2005) Steve was noticed by Jeffrey Kruger MBE, the CEO of TKO Records, who has now helped Steve to produce another album WORD GAMES to be released in 2006.

During a series of acoustic dates from October 2005-May 2006 Steve recorded ACOUSTIC TAKES a 13 track album of his songs stripped down to guitar and vocals from which the acoustic version of Chasing Rainbows was selected for inclusion on the Mi5 Recordings Q Sheet CD. Steve's most recent single Rockin' Up The World (July 2006) has achieved widespread radio playlistings and his next album WORD GAMES will be released later this year followed by his fifth album STELLA AND JOE in 2007. ...read more here.

New Songs Added - 5/21/07

My first selection this week from American Idol alumni is the single, "Everybody Loves" from Constantine Maroulis. Constantine has been very busy. He has been working on his album and now is currently playing a part on the soap opera "The Bold and the Beautiful."

David Radford was in the top 24 on Season 5 of American Idol. From his independently produced album of four songs I picked "Take It All." Here is an excerpt from his bio:
Heartthrob crooner David Radford achieved international fame as a fan favorite on the hit musical television show American Idol. Hailing from Crystal Lake, IL, David is one of six siblings and has studied voice individually and chorally.

Inspired by such legendary crooners as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., Radford is easily compared to modern swing recording star Michael Buble. On stage David has made starring appearances in such musical theater classics as “Guys and Dolls” and at such venues as the legendary Woodstock Opera House. ...read more here.
Another Idol alumni is the first winner of Canadian Idol, Ryan Malcolm. He is now part of the rock band "Low Level Flight" which has just released the album "Urgency." I have added their first single "Change For Me."
Born in Kingston, Ryan started singing in a band at age 11, alongside his older brother and dad, who opened a fine dining restaurant that had entertainment three nights a week. “My dad taught me everything,” says Ryan, revealing that his father was once in a band with the original members of April Wine.

At 16, Ryan started writing songs and produced his first demo at 17 in Sarah Harmer’s studio, although he admits, “They were not very good. I’m not going to lie.”

With no foreseeable connection to the Canadian music industry hub of Toronto, he enrolled in college for policing, but continued playing nightclubs in Kingston and honing his songwriting in his spare time.

In 2003, he learned of the inaugural Canadian Idol auditions and tried out. To his surprise, he was accepted and decided to go have fun in Toronto for the summer performing on the television talent search. Little did he know he would win. His debut full-length, Home, an album he made only a little contribution to as a writer because of the rush job to get it out and the nature of the show, went platinum (100,000) in Canada, was nominated for a Juno (pop album of the year) and spawned the number one single “Something More,” but Ryan was not artistically satisfied.

When the hoopla died down and contractual obligations were met, Ryan retreated and got to work on what he really wanted to do — start a band of his own. He had found from the Idol writing camps that hooks and melodies came quite easily to him and took the tips he learned from established writers and applied them to his more rudimentary early writing experiences.

Rounding up Shaun and James, and dubbing his new band Low Level Flight, they went into Toronto’s Vault Studios with producer Mike Borkosky (illScarlett), who took a creative approach to the making of the record, occasionally using different plug-ins, an ‘80s guitar-keyboard, vocal effects, and other cool ideas to ensure the album had a unique, yet accessible quality. ...read more here.

New Songs Added - 5/14/07

From among the American Idol alumni I have added a new track, "Carolina Blue", from Bucky Covington's CD, "Buck Covington" and the bonus track "Band of Gold" from Kimberley Locke's new CD, "Based On A True Story."

"That's My Story" is by the independent artist Drew Young. His bio states:
...His musical palette is varied, voluptuous and voracious. Pop, Blues, Folk and Rock are spread around like soft butter, enticing the listener with hooks as deep as the Grand Canyon itself. His music is a roller coaster without the sudden stops and jarring free-falls.

“Lush Pop” is the best way to describe Drew’s music - a little Tom Waits, a dash of REM, a pinch of John Cougar, and maybe, just maybe, a little Neil Diamond. (That is, if Neil Diamond had several shots of Jameson’s in him, and if he was backed by a super tight ensemble.)

Drew’s music stands apart from the fray while still embracing the familiar. His music is every bit as unique and recognizable as that of, say, Springsteen, Train, Tom Petty or U2. (Not that he necessarily sounds like any of them). When asked about this, the singer-songwriter says, “I always strive to create my own sound and be the BEST Drew Young that I can be. The CD you are holding is my honest and true musical expression”. ... Read more here.
Another interesting group this week is Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. Grace's voice kind of reminds me of Edie Brickell. "Ah Mary" is the song of their's that I added this week. Here is an excerpt from their bio:
...Potter and the Nocturnals grew from the roots of rock & roll in what some might call the old-fashioned way; For the first two years, Potter and the band teamed up with friends to run their “Ragged Company” label from her dad’s old sign shop, handling everything from CD graphics to booking the tours. In 2005 they joined forces with indie911 founder Justin Goldberg after reading his music industry book suggesting new artists should tour instead of look for record deals. The group turned down their first label offer and chose instead to sign on with booking agent Hank Sacks, now with Monterey Peninsula Artists, and began playing a countless number of music festivals and opening slots until gradually building great word of mouth. Their sound? They’re a neoclassic rock & roll band possessing bona fide chops, a natural sense of dynamics and a palate containing all the useful colors, and these qualities allow them to stretch out onstage, to riveting effect. Perhaps their greatest asset is the ability to transcend genres, never content to settle into one predefined sound. GPN were once the up-and-coming darlings of the modern jazz and blues scene, receiving incessant comparisons to Norah Jones and Lucinda Williams. Yet their magnetic live shows and dedication to the road earned the band a warm welcoming from the jam-band community, leading to two nominations at the 2006 Jammy’s. At the same time, This is Somewhere is a testament to the band’s true roots – pure rock music. The influence of predecessors The Band, The Rolling Stones, and Little Feat is clear. Still, GPN’s raw passion and uncompromising politics more directly evoke the memory of the great Neil Young & Crazy Horse, whose Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere served as one of the inspirations for the album title. .... read more here.
The other tracks added this week are "Green River" by Creedence Clearwater Revival, "Sacred Love" by Sting, and "Break It Down Again" by Tears for Fears.

New Songs Added - 5/7/07

Sorry to be late with my blog about the new songs. Better late than never! Right?

Only a couple of offerings from American Idol contestants this week. I added "Better Off Alone" from Katharine McPhee's album and "Need" from Half Past Forever (featuring Chris Sligh). Here is an excerpt from their bio:
The band's "way of thinking" has always been to write great songs that audiences can sing along with, then "smarten them up" by adding in as many elements as they can. They are never satisfied with the sound that would be expected.

Take a Chance on Something Beautiful is a cacophony of catchy songs that will have audiences singing along interspersed with odd, esoteric instrumental tracks and effects. The 14 tracks come together to form an album that is an experience from start to finish. Half Past Forever seems to be a long-lost band that makes albums instead of singles.

"I would say that I write more form an album standpoint than I do from a single standpoint," says lead singer and main songwriter, former member Chris Sligh. "Don't get me wrong, i think a song like 'Know' or 'In a Moment' are both singles...but as I write and as we produce and record, I am thinking about how to tie in a whole album together."

Adam concurs, "An album is a lot bigger than a simple song. Lots of people can write great songs, but it's tough to put together a full album that ties together and is a callback to the days of making great album, like the late 60's and 70's."

"My goal with this album," says former HPF member, Chris, "Is that people would come away with a sense that there is more to hear with each successive listen...yet there is something familiar in the way I write. I think when I listen to my favorite writers, that's the feeling I get. With my favorite artists, I want to hear more in the turn of a phrase or listen for distinct musical performances, yet the songs feel familiar. I really hope that the listener feels the same with this album."

"A Strange Education" is the title track from the album A Strange Education by the U.K. group, The Cinematics. According to their bio...
The Glasgow four piece beat combo The Cinematics are an intriguing gang of young boys with an eye on some fairly serious goals. With influences ranging from The Cure, Television, Magazine, Wire, The Smashing Pumpkins to Talking Heads, The Smiths and Jeff Buckley. The band have a diverse taste in music which in turn makes their sound interesting, but easily accessible.

Since moving to Glasgow the band have settled into the regime of what they do best - making melodic guitar music of the emotional variety. The meeting and forming of The Cinematics is not a story of chance like answering an ad for a singer and drummer wanted for some college band shenanigans but a story of predetermined fate. It's a tale of four boys growing up in a place where livestock numbers outnumber the people by 20 to 1 and where accordion based folk music rules. ...

Independent artist John Pedersen is also featured this week with his track "It's Good" from his album, Groovidi. Here are excerpts from his bio:
John Pedersen is a keyboardist from Southern California who plays a variety of interesting and compelling instrumental music. His tunes have a certain "magic" associated with them, and listeners are transported to a pleasant world of infectious melodies and lush soundscapes. Not content with one style, he writes and performs everything from Smooth Jazz to Groove-Oriented Electronica, and all points between. Using guest musicians on bass, guitar, sax, flute and drums, Mr. Pedersen gets a full sound on his discs. Andy Machin, co-producer and engineer, plays electric and acoustic guitar, a well as bass and percussion. Jeff Winckler adds a good rhythmic component with his superlative drumming skills. Adrienne Nims lends her talents by playing saxophone and flute on John's brand new CD, "Groovidi". ...

...Just released, John's new album, "GROOVIDI", features full-on jazz and chill-out instrumentals with infectious melodies played on guitar, sax, flute and piano. The lead instruments are accompanied by some very hypnotic grooves courtesy of a hip rhythm section. This is smooth jazz as its best with influences of funk, blues, Latin flamenco and chill out lounge. A very enjoyable ride awaits the listener on this one! Several tracks are avaiable for your listening pleasure right here on my profile, but listening samples for all 60 of my tunes are available at www.findingparadisejazz.com.

Also added this week are "Try Again" by Keane, "Garden Party" by Ricky Nelson, "As Good As It Gets" by Olivia Eden, and one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite artists... a live performance of "Crying" by k.d. lang.

Happy listening!
